In mid 1972 a Bible study involving seven couples from the Zimmerman area began meeting twice monthly. During the months that followed the idea of starting an evangelical church in Zimmerman was prayerfully discussed. On April 18, 1973 the group met with Pastor Mervin Seashore, Associate North Central Disctrict Superintendent of the Evangelical Free Church of America. He shared information and requirements for involvement in the EFCA. Initially the North Central District Board was hesitant, but after visiting the community and seeing the growth already apparent they became enthusiastic.
An organizational meeting was held on June 2, 1973. Leadership positions were filled and the group voted to become a member of the EFCA, taking the name Zimmerman Evangelical Free Church.
One of the major hurdles of the church was where to hold services. Although the local elementary school seemed a good option it was at that time not school policy to rent to churches. This became an urgent item of prayer at meetings. Praise the Lord! The school quickly changed their policy and after just a little over one month since forming, the church held its first public worship service on July 8, 1973. Thirty people were in attendance.
Great changes took place over the years. With land donation in 1974 a building committee was started. Services in the new building began in 1974. Building additions in 1982 and 2002 bring us to the facility we have today.
Closing in on 40 years of ministry has Zimmerman Evangelical Free Church looking hopefully into the future for the next step of the journey to which God has called us.
